Far North Queensland Dementia Alliance
Creating dementia awareness & support in the community
Why Dementia Friendly?

Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia today, and there is yet no cure.

Nearly half a million Australian live with dementia, and without a medical breakthrough, the number is expected to double by 2050. Far North Queensland is no exception with more than 5,900 people living with dementia.

Yet, there is alarmingly low awareness or understanding of dementia, which leads to stigma, isolation and discrimination.

These concerns prevent people with dementia from living their best life in the community.

With more awareness and understanding of dementia without stigma or fear, communities will become inclusive and support people living with dementia and their family, who can then improve their everyday life and be involved in their communities.

Dementia Friendly Bowls Club

A passionate group of Edge Hill Bowls Club members including our dementia advocate, George Burnett, has committed to changing the community for the better. Proudly, the club has been acknowledged as the first ‘Dementia Friendly Organisation’ in Cairns and Far North Queensland and granted funding from Dementia Australia’s Community Engagement Program.

Staff are educated on dementia and registered as Dementia Friends. Club facilities were refurbished into a dementia-friendly environment, and special bowls equipment has been purchased, all of which make the club experience enabling and enjoyable for people living with dementia and other disabilities.

Social engagement activities and education programs for people living with dementia and their care partners have been held at the club each month since April 2021. At Edge Hill Bowls Club, we aim to lead by example and continue to develop ‘Dementia Friendly Communities’ in FNQ.

FNQ Dementia Alliance

FNQ Dementia Alliance has been formed to expand the Dementia Friendly Community program beyond the Bowls Club by bringing together the people and organisations in the communities.

With people living with dementia and their family as our main voices, the alliance works as a support network for people living with dementia, caregivers, service provider, Dementia Friendly Organisations, inclusive groups and members of communities.

It is run by volunteers and funded by donations and fund raising, with much support of Edge Hill Bowls Club and Dementia Australia.

Monthly activities with morning tea and meetings are held at the Edge Hill Bowls Club. We welcome new members, volunteers and visitors to connect and share experiences.

We also welcome the community members to information sessions, education workshops, “become a Dementia Friend” sessions, and other events throughout the year.
